Sometimes You Have To Be Quiet!

Our mouths can at times get us trouble if we are not careful. There is power in what you say. When you speak a word, you are sowing a seed; a very small seed that has not yet grown. There are some words we say, however can not take it back. This is why we need to ensure that what we say must be from God. In reference to Proverbs 18 verse 24 it says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]”.

In other words, this is saying that whatever you confess or say with your mouth has meaning, and eventually can have power of you if you do not know how to control your words…For instance, you may have prayed and longed for something that you really believe will benefit you. When it does not seem like its heading your way, you tend to think or speak negative things such as “I know I am not going to get it”, “What is the use”, “I give up”. These words have already been on your mind before you said it. But I strongly believe that your words do start from your mind (another topic for another day).

Ephesians 4 verse 29 says “Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech that is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it”.

In life, certain situations will crop up to test you. They will try to see if you will retaliate or fight back. Most times, it can be from those we love. When they offend us, we are so tempted to talk back, so that we do not look as if we are the ‘weak’ one; other times we curse them without even knowing it. But one thought that came to my mind is that we can actually curse OURSELVES if we are not careful. Your words are the first point of self-curse. If you do not control your mouth, you are not only going to damage yourself, but others around you…YOU ARE WHAT YOU SPEAK! Remember there is a time to talk, and a time to keep quiet…

Individuals such as TD Jakes, Heather Lindsey, Joyce Meyer etc, they are well known powerful ministers. From what I believe, God has given them the ability to preach the Gospel, as well as encourage us in several ways through their sermons, conferences and their websites. I believe that because their thoughts were aligned to Gods thoughts, it is allowing them to prosper and excel up till now! Our words can determine our future! If you have any desire that you plan to fulfill, give it to the Lord in prayer…just because you may not see anything happening now does not mean it will not happen.

At times, your FAITH WILL BE TESTED to see whether you trust in God enough to HOLD ON to His promises, or try and do these things in your own strength (which from experience, can be draining)…we just need to be still and know that God watches over each and every one of us (Psalms 46 v 10). But you might say, its hard to wait for something that may not come to pass…wait a minute…the things you desire, have you consulted God about it? Is it something of His Will for you to have? What is your MOTIVE BEHIND HAVING IT?

The Lord looks at the heart! That is one of the ways God can test you…not only that but by what you say! Another example is talking about others…some of us assume that we are better than someone else because we have ABC, they don’t; I have a job, they don’t; I have, I have, I have…but have you noticed that not everybody’s blessing is the same and does come at the specific day you planned for it to come?! Gods timing is not your timing! Do not speak negatively over yourself, neither COMPARE yourself to anybody else because we are all UNIQUE in the eyes of God. 2 Corinthians 10 verse 12 says “Not that we have the audacity to venture to class, or even to compare ourselves with some who exalt and furnish testimonials for themselves! However, when they measure themselves with themselves, and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding and behave unwisely”. Not only that, but how you speak towards others can also have an impact on your own personal blessing and future positively and negatively.

When I read this scripture, it really hit me! At times, it can be soo easy to compare yourself to others; their skin, their body, their wealth, their family, their occupation, their finances etc…YES IT HAPPENS! However, apart from our minds, its our words that have so much power over these comparisons! If we continue to speak what others have and do not realise what you have already, you will not only gain what your hearts desires, but you are bringing grief to God…in all things BE CONTENT! My favourite saying is “IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE“, and really, it could have! Look at so many things that are happening in the world:

  • Child abuse
  • Human trafficking

  • Christians being persecuted in several countries

  • Kidnapping, killing and raping

  • Lack of resources such as food, clothing

  • Homelessness

  • Suicide

  • Loneliness and several more…

I do not want to go into great detail about all the above, but what I have to say to you is ‘watch your mouth!!’. Nevertheless, your mouth is a gift from God, but please let your words bring happiness towards someone else! Even though someone may hurt you, let us be wise not to curse them; when you do not get what you desire, do not say ‘it was not meant for me’. It wasn’t supposed to be for you initially because God knows BEST for you! He has His best interests at heart for your life! Jeremiah 29 verse 11: “For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give toy hope in your final outcome”.

Thank you for reading…please share with someone you know is struggling with their mouth.
